Xenopia is a research, art and design project aimed at prototyping a domestic hormones Beta Hcg test as a tool to address reproductive justice and the right to access abortion. We will investigate the historical scientific practices around living interfaces as controlling technologies (i.e. the living pregnancy test Xenopus Leavis frog, mice, seeds). The right to access abortion is under attack and Beta Hcg testing is a mandatory test to access safe abortion but is poorly available for people living in rural areas and in marginalised conditions. Weeks of pregnancy are the playing field on which the war against access to abortion is waged, so we see in this prototype the possibility of facilitating the path autonomously by giving people back control. Collectives defending reproductive rights in countries where abortion is illegal or restricted (as Italy) and safely providing support, do not have access to this kind of easing. With an inter-species perspective, we would therefore develop this prototype and participatory workshops as political act of empowerment and concrete response to reproductive justice. Ascolta XENOPIA LIBERA il PODCAST

Giulia (co-founder of ALMA Futura) is currently running an artistic residency at Hackteria ZET Open Science Lab in Zurich and at GaudiLab In Luzern, supported by Index Freiraum Stipendium. Xenopia just won the IMPETUS Accelerator Program as part of EU Horizon.&#38;nbsp;

Biofilie Lab is a kitchen based educational lab to learn how to grow vaginal microbiome at home. 
During the workshop, participants will access the procedure of the Biofilie Lab protocol and explore their personal relationship with vaginal microbiome and its understanding following recent scientific studies. There is a growing interest in the vaginal microbiome from the citizen science field, but there is still room to discuss the power balance in the conversation. Biofilie Lab is also an interdisciplinary project aimed to explore the biosocial and political intersectionality of human-vaginal microbiome combining disciplines like art, design, microbiology, medical anthropology and feminist theories. The project will engage in a political questioning of the emergence of the new scientific understandings on vaginal microbiome.Biofilie Lab project is part of a larger work called the ALMA Toolkit project, a set of educational tools and practices for self-exploration, a fundamental means carried out by feminist collectives to re-appropriate the body. Microbiology, science and laboratories are still inaccessible but fundamental fields because they are not neutral and in turn create categories and identities that are subject to a hierarchy of knowledge. This is why we decided to develop the Biofilie Lab Protocol and focus on the vaginal microbiome, i.e. the set of micro-organisms with which we live in symbiosis. 
We hope that this protocol will become more and more accessible and will serve to better understand this symbiosis.

ALMA Toolkit&#38;nbsp;Vincitore del programma STARTS Cross Fertilization 2023 &#38;nbsp;
Le donne sono state considerate streghe quando la società ha visto che erano in grado di guarire, curare e prendersi cura di se stesse. Da allora una cultura di vergogna e tabù intorno al corpo femminile ha pervaso la nostra società, portando lacune cruciali sulla conoscenza della salute vaginale. A ciò si sono aggiunti i tabù sociali legati alla salute intima che limitano ulteriormente le donne nell'accesso alla consapevolezza, nel contatto con il proprio corpo e nella conoscenza della propria vulva e della propria vagina. Cose semplici come conoscere i genitali, interpretare i fluidi, riconoscere l'ovulazione e osservare la cervice sono considerate competenze da esperti. Per affrontare questo problema, attiviste e organizzazioni femministe e transfemministe hanno costruito risorse educative in crowdsourcing. La nostra idea si basa sulla pratica femminista sviluppata negli anni '70 dell'auto-visita ginecologica, come strumento per affrontare la violenza medica, i pregiudizi e la gerarchia con l'obiettivo di dare potere alle donne. Da allora non è cambiato molto: i diritti riproduttivi sono ancora rifiutati, il divario di genere nell'assistenza sanitaria e nella ricerca è ancora ampio e le persone con vagina continuano a ricevere una scarsa educazione intima e sessuale.Per questo stiamo sviluppando ALMA Toolkit, una serie di materiali e strumenti educativi progettati per democratizzare e destigmatizzare l'apprendimento della salute intima e preparare le persone con vagina nella condizione di autogestire il proprio corpo. ALMA Toolkit si compone di quattro parti: la prima è un mazzo di carte progettato per l'autocoscienza che attraverso il gioco crea uno spazio sicuro per condividere esperienze di salute intima. La seconda parte è costituita da un set di speculum e modelli anatomici di vulve per educare e autoeseguire un esame ginecologico. La terza parte consiste in protocolli e materiali per creare un mini laboratorio biologico in cui sperimentare e conoscere i propri batteri vaginali. La quarta parte è una piattaforma comunitaria online dove condividere le esperienze di autoesplorazione. Il kit di strumenti è stato creato per essere utilizzato in un workshop o in un collettivo, a breve forniremo una formazione aggiuntiva per imparare a facilitare i workshop.La maggior parte degli oggetti fisici del Toolkit e le informazioni saranno disponibili open-source con la possibilità di essere personalizzabili. Le persone avranno la possibilità di scaricare e creare liberamente il loro kit di strumenti, e per coloro che non hanno accesso a macchine per la fabbricazione o a materiali biologici daremo la possibilità di acquistarli dal nostro sito web. Il nostro target attuale sono i collettivi e i gruppi di persone con vagina di età superiore ai 18 anni. In futuro vorremmo esplorare la possibilità di riprogettare il Toolkit per esigenze specifiche (ad esempio per persone con disabilità, adolescenti, minoranze vulnerabili).PARTE 1
Speaking Bitterness, come è stata chiamata la pratica della presa di coscienza femminista, è un gioco di carte che permette a un circolo di persone oppresse di genere di creare il proprio rituale di uno spazio sicuro di condivisione. La presa di coscienza è un'esperienza intensa, in cui gli elementi sistemici della violenza emergono e danno senso alle esperienze individuali. Il gioco delle carte incoraggia la narrazione e l'ascolto reciproco.PARTE 2 
Autoesplorazione, riflette sull'uso dello speculum e sugli esami pelvici. Lo speculum è stato inventato da James Marion Sims, il "padre" della ginecologia moderna, che ha commesso torture e sperimentazioni su donne schiave per testare strumenti chirurgici e metodi per la fistola vaginale. L'idea è quella di affrontare la vergogna che si prova nell'esporre i corpi durante gli esami medici. Il recupero dell'oggetto è anche un atto politico di problematizzazione del modo in cui quei corpi sono stati considerati nel corso della storia. Se consideriamo ad esempio la contraddizione tra la parola latina per vulva, pudendum, che significa "ciò di cui ci si deve vergognare" e la parola pube, che indica la partecipazione del maschio adulto alla sfera pubblica. Le persone affette da vulva sono quindi invitate a prendere in mano lo speculum, a usarlo e a guardare la propria cervice. L'uso dello speculum e la sua invenzione hanno reso la ginecologia l'arte di rendere visibile ciò che allo stesso tempo dovrebbe essere tenuto nascosto. Attraverso un'esperienza collettiva di apprendimento e dimostrazione, la pratica ginecologica viene messa in discussione perché non è solo lo studio del corpo delle donne, ma crea corpi femminili.PARTE 3
Biofilie Lab, un laboratorio didattico in cucina per conoscere il microbioma vaginale. Quest'ultima parte di Alma Toolkit è stata finora solo concettualizzata ed esplorata durante la residenza artistica all'Hangar di Barcellona e alla Waag Society di Amsterdam. Durante i laboratori partecipativi di Alma Toolkit abbiamo potuto divulgare solo alcuni campioni di batteri isolati.
Stiamo progettando e testando il Toolkit con diversi gruppi e collettivi in Italia che stanno già esplorando pratiche di empowerment in ginecologia, ma che hanno anche diversi livelli di conoscenza e bisogni specifici.

Questo lavoro ha messo in luce due barriere fondamentali nell'attuale processo di auto-scoperta dell'educazione e la disconnessione tra informazione e corpo, e la mancanza di uno spazio inclusivo e sicuro in cui le persone possano condividere e co-creare conoscenza.Nel 2016 abbiamo presentato Future Flora (Premio Starts 2018) - un kit che propone uno scenario speculativo di biohacking sulla coltivazione di batteri vaginali sani a casa per bilanciare il microbioma intimo. Il suo racconto si è unito alla discussione in corso a livello globale sulla rivendicazione dei corpi femminili - probabilmente anche a una nuova ondata di femminismo, segnata soprattutto dall'importanza dei social media e dell'auto-organizzazione. Future Flora non è stato concepito come un prodotto vero e proprio, ma piuttosto come un argomento di conversazione sulla cura dell'igiene intima femminile, cosa che ha fatto con successo (Dezeen, MAK DesignLab Permanent Collection). In questo contesto, abbiamo avviato Alma - un sensore di pH indossabile per monitorare i fluidi vaginali e prevenire le infezioni batteriche precoci (Re-Fream, Vision Health Pioneers, NANODTC University of Cambridge) come tentativo di portare un prodotto reale sul mercato.

ALMA recently collaborated with The Voice - a community based in Newcastle (UK). Together we explored  the journey that people encounter during menopause and co-designing educational tools to support them.We invited participants to co-design educational tools and methodologies to develop an educational language that links the well-being and care of their experiences with peri, meno and post-menopause.&#38;nbsp; Together we ran two workshops.

	ALMA Toolkit&#38;nbsp;
Winner of STARTS Cross Fertilization Programme 2023 &#38;nbsp;
Women have been considered witches when society saw that they could heal, cure and care for themselves. Since then a culture of shame and taboo around the female body has pervaded our society, leading to crucial knowledge gaps in vaginal health. This has been compounded by social taboos around intimate health which additionally limit women from accessing knowledge, connecting with their body and learning about their vulvas and vaginas. Simple things such as knowing the genitals, interpreting fluids, recognizing ovulation and observing the cervix are considered experts’ skills. To address this, feminist activists and organisations have built crowdsourced educational resources.&#38;nbsp;Our idea is based on the feminist practice devloped back in the ‘70 of self-gynecological visit, as a tool to confront medical violence, prejudices and hierarchy with the aim to empower women.&#38;nbsp; Since not much has changed: reproductive rights are still rejected, the gender gap in healthcare and research is still broad and people with vagina continue to receive poor intimate and sexual education.
With this in mind we developed&#38;nbsp;ALMA Toolkit a set of educational materials and tools designed to democratise and destigmatise intimate health learning and empower people with vaginas to self-manage their bodies.&#38;nbsp;The kit is easy-to-access, low-cost, open-source and encourage participation.
 

Workshop
All self-exploration begins with

The second part is a set of speculum and anatomical models of vulvas to educate and self-perform a gynecological examination.&#38;nbsp; The third part consists of protocols and materials to create a mini bio lab where people can experiment and learn about their vaginal bacteria.&#38;nbsp; The fourth part is an online community platform where to share experiences of self-exploration. The toolkit is primary made to be used in a workshop or a collective, soon we will provide additional training for workshop facilitators.Most of the physical objects of the toolkit and the information will be available as open-source with the possibility of customising it. People will have the possibility to freely download and create our toolkit, and for those who don’t have access to makery machines or bio materials we will give the chance to purchase from our website. Our current target are collectives and groups of people with vaginas aged +18.&#38;nbsp; In the future we would like to explore the possibility to re-design the toolkit for specific needs (i.e. people with disability, teenagers, vulnerable minorities). 
PART 1
Speaking Bitterness as it was called the practice of feminist consciousness raising, is a card game that allows a circle of gender oppressed people to create their own ritual of a safe space for sharing. Consciousness Raising is an intense experience, in which the systemic elements of violence emerge and make sense of individual experiences. The card game encourages storytelling and mutual listening.

PART 2&#38;nbsp;Self-exploration, reflects on the use of the speculum and pelvic examinations. The Speculum was invented by James Marion Sims, the “father” of modern gynecology, who committed torture and experimentation on slave women to test surgical tools and methods for vaginal fistula. The idea is to tackle the shame that occurs during the exposure of bodies during medical examination. The reclaiming of the object is also a political act of problematizing how those bodies have been considered during history. If we consider for example the contradiction between the latin word for Vulva, pudendum, which means “that of which one ought to be ashamed” and the word pubes, meaning the adult male participation into the public sphere. People with vulva are therefore invited to take the speculum in their own hands, use it and look at their cervix. The use of the speculum and its invention has made gynecology as the art of making visible what at the same time should be kept hidden. Through a collective experience of learning and showing, gynecological practice is challenged as it is not only the study of women's bodies but it makes female bodies.

This last part of Alma Toolkit has been until now only conceptualized and explored during the art residency at Hangar in Barcelona and at Waag Society in Amsterdam. We have been only able to disclose during Alma Toolkit participatory workshops some samples of isolated bacteria.

We are designing and testing the toolkit with different groups and collectives based in Italy who are already exploring practices of empowerment in gynaecology but who also have different levels of knowledge and needs.

**&#38;nbsp;Over the last 3 years, ALMA team has been running 16 workshops across the globe to listen to women’s stories about practices, culture and language in intimate health. This work has highlighted two key barriers in the current education and self-discovery process: the disconnection between information and body, and the lack of a safe inclusive space for people to share and co-create knowledge. 
In 2016 we presented Future Flora (Starts Prize 2018) - a kit, proposing a speculative biohacking scenario on growing healthy vaginal bacteria at home to balance the intimate microbiome. Its narrative joined the ongoing global discussion about claiming back the female bodies - arguably even a new wave of feminism, marked primarily by the importance of social media and self-organization. Future Flora was not meant as a real product but rather a conversation starter about female intimate care, which it successfully did (Dezeen, MAK DesignLab Permanent Collection). In this context, we started Alma - a wearable pH sensor to monitor vaginal fluids and prevent early bacterial infections (Re-Fream, Vision Health Pioneers, NANODTC University of Cambridge) as an attempt to bring a real product to the market.

Louisa is every woman* who has to deal with
issues concerning her body and also her 
intimacy everyday.
 
How many difficulties
does she face in her everyday life, from
 social stigma to medical bias? 
How able is
 she at finding information on her own, or 
thanks to networking and sisterhood? 
Can 
technology, platforms or new tools help her?

Louisa is one and more archetypes of
 people identified by designer Giulia
Tomasello, together with Isabel Farina 
medical anthropologist, during their user 
research studies and educational processes 
regarding the contested field of intimate care 
Louisa becomes the narrative device for 
investigating two of Giulia’s main projects:
 Future Flora and ALMA.
Both of them are focused on overcoming the 
taboos related to the female body, its 
functioning, its genitals and its fluids, 
creating new tools for claim and exploration
 in health and (self-)care. The former uses
 microorganisms and do-it-yourself practices 
and the second inclusive wearable
 technologies, both of which imagine new
 solutions to empower women over their own
 bodies and are based on research and
